STEPS IN THE BRASS RUBBING PROCESS

1. Materials required for brass rubbing
are 2 cloths (one a soft duster), scissors or x-acto
knife, masking tape, heel ball wax and special paper.
First the brass is cleaned of dust and grit. A soft brush
can be used if necessary. This first step is very
important as it prevents the paper from being torn or
pierced while rubbing. Before laying the paper over the brass it is important to study it carefully, noting approximately where things are. |

2. Here the paper is being rolled down
over the brass. It is then cut off leaving an allowance
for later trimming. The paper is then fixed securely in
place with masking tape. Before the actual rubbing is started, an outline of the brass should be obtained by rubbing gently around the edges with a cloth or your fingers. |

3. Rubbing is started, usually working
lengthwise from top to bottom. Edges may be done first as
in the photo and then the rest filled in. To produce an
effective rubbing an even pressure must be maintained
throughout the process. N.B. Brass in photo is of Robert and Lady Boothe, Sawley, Derbyshire |

4. The final step is to polish the
rubbing when it has been completed. This is done while the paper is still on the brass. The purpose of this step is to rid the rubbing of any streaks and also to give it a striking lustre. The paper is then rolled up carefully and stored in a cardboard tube until it is hung or framed. |
