LADY KATHERINE HOWARD

d.1535, St. Mary Lambeth, London, England

Rubbing size: 3' X 2'2"

Colour: Gold on Black

Price: $45(US)

Lady Howard is seen wearing a heraldic mantle, a form of dress for which there seems to be no evidence in real life, but which afforded an opportunity for identifying women of gentle birth in Art. It carries the coats of arms of both herself and her husband, Baron Howard of Effingham. The pedimental headdress completes her outfit whilst at her feet is a squirrel, an unusual animal to be seen in brass but which may be explained by the fact that they were kept as pets during the Middle Ages.
