The family of Fitzralph achieved considerable local importance in the 13th and 14th centuries, holding large estates in Essex and Suffolk. Sir William, who fought in many expeditions against the Scots, is shown wearing armour of a transitional type between the Surcoat and the Cyclas Periods, in which the arms and legs were protected by plate - a great advance.
