JOHN & ALICE CHUDDERLEGH

d.1465. Hinton St.George, Somerset

Rubbing size: 22.5" X 16"

Colour: Gold on Black

Price: $55(US)

This delightful brass has had an eventful history for it was moved from the church and later found in an outhouse at a house in Warwickshire.

Unlike the older brasses, the two effigies are turned in three-quarter profile. John wears fashionable armour with fluted placates on the breast plate, and let harness while on his head he wears a visored sallet. Alice is depicted in a decolletee gown with a fur collar and cuffs and a sash tied at the back. She wears a butterfly headdress, the English form of the hennin.

The shield depicts the arms of Chudderlegh impaling the arms of Bois of Halberton for which there is no explanation.
